R&M AWARD WINNING ENGINEERING PROJECTS

2002 - Juneau Project of the Year
In cooperation with ADOT&PF, SE Region, R&M Engineering provided surveys, soils, permitting, civil design and inspection for the Juneau Channel Drive Wayside Construction Project.  The project improved an existing roadside sport fishery in Juneau addressing parking, restroom facilities, picnic facilities, and a floating dock for handicap access.

1998 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Honorable Mention
Jointly given to Ty-Matt, Inc., Ketchikan Pulp Company and R&M Engineering, Inc. for the Ketchikan Pulp Company Digester Removal.  R & M used finite element three dimensional modeling capabilities to provide a dynamic seismic analysis and design.  This design allowed reinforcing of the 5 story, 120' tall steel framed brick enclosed building.  This reinforcement allowed removal and salvage of four 270 ton, 18' diameter, 55' high digesters.  R&M's timely assistance allowed salvage of the digesters prior to demolition of the 1952 vintage building.

1995 - Alaska Municipal League and SE Engineering Project of the Year Award
Calhoun Avenue Reconstruction Project.  Calhoun Street is the roadway from the Alaska State Capitol Building to the Governor's Mansion.  This roadway is traversed daily by the Governor and staff, Legislators, high government officials, visiting dignitaries and tourists.  It is a showpiece for the Capital City and state government.  Over decades the neighborhood and the street were allowed to decay.  The purpose of this project was to convert Calhoun Street from an unsightly unsafe embarrassing eyesore to an aesthetically pleasing, comfortable safe, and structurally sound route of travel.  Through reconstruction and the addition of pedestrian amenities, new lighting and underground utilities, and structural repair and replacement, Calhoun Street became a vehicle and pedestrian way that will function well for at least the next thirty years.

1995 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Honorable Mention
This award was given to R&M for structural design of the Fireweed Place for Senior Citizens.  The project consisted of 4 levels of senior citizen housing over 1 level of parking conveniently located in downtown Juneau on Willoughby Avenue.  The upper 4 levels are wood framed and supported on a two-way post tension concrete deck on the second floor.  This floor system allowed a thin floor system that helped solve height limitations.  The project was supported half on bedrock and half on piles socketed into a sloping bedrock surface that was in excess of 60 feet below finish grade in some locations.

1994 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Award
Delta Western Fuel Storage Facility. 

Awarded to Delta Western for "fast track" design and construction of 3.6 million gallon fuel storage facility built on Lot 2A, AJ Subdivision, Juneau, Alaska.  The work consisted of erecting 8 vertical above ground tanks, steel containment dike, truck loading rack with bottom loading capability, 850 L.F. of (4)6" and (2)4" above ground fuel pipes, marine dock improvements, in-water pile supports, 140'x60' pre-fabricated metal office/warehouse, site grading, oil/water separator installation, site drainage, landscaping, site lighting and computerized truck fueling stations.  R&M was retained for all site surveying, inspection and civil engineering design.  This work was accomplished in 4 1/2 months of which one month was during record setting snowfall accumulation.  The project required extreme coordination and scheduling between local government review agencies, consultants, and the owner to expedite this project to meet the CBJ granted time extensions.  The old Delta Western fuel facility was vacated and the community of Juneau could feel safe again in this neighborhood.

1993 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Honorable Mention Award
For outstanding achievement for the Distin Avenue Bin Wall Replacement.  The work consisted of the design/construction of a steel piling supported vehicular trestle, with prestressed hollow core deck panels, a modified jersey barrier rail, an upper reinforced earth retaining structure independent of the trestle, and a lower concrete retaining wall supported by the pile flanges.  The project was in a residential area with tight controls on noise and available work area.

1988 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Award
Jointly given to City and Borough of Juneau, Engineering Department, and R&M for the analysis, design, and construction inspection of Calhoun Avenue retaining wall replacement project in Juneau.  This work was an 18' high retaining wall over 200' in length constructed within 20' of a higher residence on a 1:1 hillside slope.

1987 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Award
Jointly given to City and Borough of Juneau, Engineering Department, and R&M for the replacement project of the Juneau International Airport, Jordan Creek culvert.  The work included permitting, surveys, soils, and design as well as construction management/inspection.

1986 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Honorable Mention Award
Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge Survey.  A 3,500(+) acre boundary survey which included aerial photography and photogrammetric mapping as well as boundary survey retracement and special exhibits.

1979 - SE Alaska Engineering Project of the Year Award
Given to R&M for their geotechnical review and analysis of facility settlement at the Auke Bay Elementary School, Juneau.  The work included project historic records research, topographic surveys and mapping, subsurface exploration/testing, and a complete geotechnical analysis.
